Aikido is a non-competitive self defense art which emphasizes cooperation and non violence. With over 30 years in Calgary Calgary, Aikikai has established itself as a top level school of traditional aikido following the classic teachings of the art.
All instructors are certified by Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Tokyo Japan under the direction of Igarashi Shihan 7th Dan. Black belt testing is conducted by Igarshi Shihan on his yearly visits to Calgary. Each year Calgary Aikikai hosts a variety of seminars with Sensie's from around the world (Japan, Germany, United States). All active instructors are all 2nd Dan (blackbelt) and over and provide instruction for children though adults.
Students in adult classes range between 15 and 63 years of age and they are designed for all levels of fitness, ability and skill.
The dojo is located in a church gym with over 1400sq. ft. of mats available during instruction.
Aikido is based on tradition sword arts as they are applied to hand techniques, and for this reason instruction is also given in tanto (knife), bokken (wooden sword) as well as jo (staff) techniques to further students understanding of how maai (distance), timing and position are paramount to any defense system.
Visitors as well as trial practices (free) are encouraged.
