Derived from the samurai fighting art of Aikijutsu of ancient Japan, Aikido is termed the “Modern Martial Art” because it places an emphasis on the development of harmony and cooperation rather than competition and the violent subduing of opponents. Aikido translates as “the way of harmony with the universe”.
Morihei Ueshiba, known to Aikido practitioners as O'Sensei (Great Teacher), a recognized master of Aikijutsu, developed what is now known as Aikido in order to strengthen and unify the mind, body and spirit.
