Karate is not a game of points, weight classes or showy demonstrations. It is a martial art and way of life that trains a practitioner to be peaceful; but if conflict is unavoidable, true karate dictates taking down an opponent with a single blow. Such an action requires strength, speed, focus, control. But these physical aspects are only part of the practice; they are just the vehicle, not the journey itself.
The form of karate that we teach is called Shotokan Karate. It is the traditional Japanese Martial Art founded by Master Funakoshi Gichin, and was the first style of Karate-do introduced to Japan. In 1949 the Japan Karate Association (JKA) was created, and today it is the world’s largest and most prestigious karate organization, and has a vast membership in over 100 countries.
Sensei Garth Templeman is the head instructor of the school, and he and Sempeis France Guillemette and Marie-Hélène Crawford are JKA certified instructors. They continue their training in Ottawa under Sensei Saeki (7th dan and the national Chief Instructor, CJKF) to bring the international expertise and training philosophies of the JKA to the Town of Arnprior. Under their leadership the school offers quality instruction for people of all ages with training specifically geared to each individual’s potential. The school provides access to local, provincial, national and international training, seminars and competition, should your training goals include competition.
