Nice school but no clear direction for for students. After watching 2 kids 3 times a week and also participating myself 2-3 times a week for over a year, I've realized that efforts are not rewarded and skill seems to be irrelevant for one to progress. Some kids are clearly lacking skill and are advanced to the next level while other kids and are often over looked.
My concerns are echoed by other parents, it's hard to explain to one kid why he or she wasn't advanced when the other kid who was advanced clearly doesn't know their material.
If there was some explanation, it would be easier to understand and keep kids motivated. In some cases my own kid was advanced and I was confused as to why. There is no explanation and the few times that I have inquired to try to understand, the information I was given was complete BS. For example, I was told they don't advance people that quickly but then on the next test you see someone get advanced that just showed up, they spent half the time learning the material and didn't, but they get advanced.
After a year of evaluation, I've come to realize that this dojo is a business. They cram people through the system and advance people randomly according to need for different belts and class sizes within the dojo. Talent seems to be irrelevant and the feedback for students is really lacking. I've attended other dojo's in my life and overal I would give this an average rating. Prepare to be confused and sometimes disappointed and at other times surprised when your child or yourself gets called to the next test.
Don't expect any feedback as to why it is the way it is, And don't try to understand the system because it seems pretty random. Keep your head down, practice, and maybe you'll understand it.
