North Vancouver Aikikai (North Shore Aikido) is a B.C. registered not-for-profit Society #S-52265 our mandate is the preservation of and instruction in Traditional Aikido. Aikido is a true "Budo", that is the Japanese terminology for the traditional martial way and was developed by the founder Morihei Ueshiba, O-Sensei (1886- 1969). Our lineage is direct through the last group of uchideshi (live-in students) to O-Sensei (Great Teacher). NVA is a private dojo and is not open to the public, only members are allowed in class and there is no viewing or visiting the dojo without permission in advance.
North Vancouver Aikikai is a member of the United States Aikido Federation, a non-profit organization which administers our grading and relationship with Aikikai Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. All of our black belt grades (Dans) are registered with HQ and are recognized by the approximately one million worldwide practitioners of Aikido. We practice a very rigorous and traditional style of Aikido with an emphasis on the technical intricacies of the thousand of techniques available.
Our Chief Instructor is Joel Posluns Sensei, 7th Dan and Shihan (Master Instructor) has practiced for 46 years and is a direct student of Yoshimitsu Yamada Sensei, Chief Instructor of New York Aikikai and Mitsunari Kanai Sensei (1939-2004) Chief Instructor of New England Aikikai, Cambridge MA. He has been a full time, professional Aikido Instructor for more than 20 years and is the founder of both San Francisco Aikikai and North Vancouver Aikikai.
