I love karate, and I can't imagine studying anywhere but there. The instructors are really helpful and I've had a lot of great experiences in my fairly short time there.

I chose Western Karate Academy primarily because of it's location close to me (I live downtown), the extremely fair prices (lower than anywhere else in town that I could find for any kind of martial art), and the convenient times (offered at 2 locations twice a week each, at two different times in the evening, which is wonderful for me as a university student with irregular class hours). After my free month-long trial period, I jumped to sign up for the regular classes. The sensei is so friendly and knowledgeable, but I was also impressed by the way he teaches self-discipline and respect. The classes are a fantastic workout and are my refuge from stressful weeks at school and work. They let me focus quietly on exactly what I'm doing and there's not a thing I would change about the classes!! If you, your child or your friend have any interest in learning a martial art, this is the place to do it!

I started at WKA when I was 12, and am now returning to continue the journey that I first started! In 2006 I had worked my way up to my brown belt and had to take a few years away to work and attend university.
Now that I am settled into my career I can come back! I cannot be more thrilled with my decision and am blown away with the warm welcome I have received from the attending community of both the North and South Shore Dojos. Sensei Jim Doan is fantastic at challenging us in our physical discipline as well as our building perspectives with the 20 Principles.
WKA is a great place to grow and I continually receive double in return for every bit of effort I give. Thanks to all of you who make that difference, it is a pleasure to train with you!

Personal growth, professional growth: to last a lifetime

A few words I would use to describe Sensei Jim Doan, the Western Karate Academy and its students based on my experience as the parent of a student:
Confidence, knowledge, discipline, control, acceptance, commitment.
Sensei Jim is an exemplary teacher, student, friend and leader for all those within the academy (student and parent alike). I have witnessed students go from shy, timid and uncertain to strong, confident and controlled. I have seen students fearful of public speaking lead the entire dojo through warm-up (and in some cases the entire class) and find their voice and command respect through their confidence, newly found knowledge and acceptance. At the same time I have seen students who are aggressive and loud become controlled and disciplined.
The prices are easily worth double or triple.
I personally cannot express my gratitude for what my son has gained through the Western Karate Academy and its fantastic group of leaders and students.

My youngest son studies at Western Karate Academy, this does not make me biased but as from what I have seen and looked into with other Academies the Sensei at this Academy believes in the success of his students. He is also a believer in the fact that in order to advance in Karate you must first learn the knowledge of all technics and discipline before you can so move on. For this I am thankful as many children including my own need all areas of the knowledge of Karate in order for it to truly richen their lives.

Western Karate Academy offers an affordable option for families who want a healthy activity the whole family can participate in. How often can parents and children study together in the same class? The morals and ethics demonstrated by WKA support us as parents as we strive to raise our children with a healthy sense of self and good moral character.
When I discovered this school a few blocks from home I was immediately impressed. The Sensei makes everyone feel welcome, and the students are all friendly as well. Its a very positive environment. My wife and 3 kids have trained with me and the family rate helped make that possible. There are a number of parents and their children training, so if you want to learn a great skill together, this is the place. Since the first month is free, come out and give it a try.
